“Are his winemaking skills and palate on par with the greats of the 20th century? It’s a question without an answer. But if he is to be compared with the best of today, the answer is an emphatic yes.”
James Halliday on Deep Woods Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy.

2020 RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON
‘Best Cabernet in Show’
2022 DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS
One of two Cabernet Sauvignons worldwide to be warded
Best in Show.
Was awarded 97 points – the equal highest score of this year’s show
“The world's greatest red wines often seem infused with a sense of
refinement and ease when mature, no matter how dense and
impenetrable they appear in youth. This hallmark of this finely
crafted Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River is that, youthful as
it is, it’s able to convey both density and refined ease
simultaneously. In colour it's dark black-purple, and you'll find
remarkable fruit concentration and closeness of texture in the mouth.
Yet the aromas are warm, open and resonant, pure and unthrusting,
and such is the clarity of organisation of the palate, finesse of the
tannins and delicacy of that fruit that it already drinks with the
serenity of a fully mature wine. Fine craftsmanship here.”

The Wine List & Menu
1st Course
Ivory Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2024, Our Price $14
This is a wine that when it comes to the marriage of value for money and quality, never disappoints. It’s a vibrant and crunchy fruit-expressive wine with stacks of palate persistence sustained with fine acidity and a little drizzle of citrus. Dry clean finish.
90 Points Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2024, Our Price $29
The impact and influence of a small amount of barrel fermentation is immediately apparent. Slightly nutty and creamy notes merge with the lively crunchy passionfruit of this variety. The palate is bright and punchy with a citrussy edge. Lifted, fine finish.
92 Points Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
Tempura whiting, fennel, lemon
2nd Course
Estate Chardonnay 2023, Our Price $29
Just a little barrel fermentation has transformed this from the normal fruit-bomb style into a wine of sophistication and style, while still allowing the punchy savvy fruit to display its virtues. Typical characters of passionfruit, gooseberry and a little snow pea are lifted with a little of the lemony oak influence. A really attractive wine to drink while it is still fresh, but which can handle a little cellaring time.
93 Points Ray Jordan Wine Guide 2024
Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2022, Our Price $49
Angus Hughson, Margaret River Wine Guide 2024
Intense grapefruit, nectarine, flinty aromas and flavours. Classical Margaret River Chardonnay with abundant grapefruit, stone fruit flavours, fine chalky textures, superb mid palate richness, some now oak nuances and well-integrated quartz-like acidity. Al dente at the finish wth persistant flinty notes. Very much in the zeitgeist.
96 Points Angus Hughson, Margaret River Wine Guide 2024
Reserve Chardonnay 2020 Magnum, Our Price $177
Margaret River chardonnay at its rich, piercing and powerful best here. This has such breathtaking fruit intensity with yellow-citrus, peach and green-mango fruit all intertwined and laced up with toasty oak, gun flint and spiced cream. Ripe citrus fruit and peaches explode in the mouth and wash waves of creamy, ripe fruit flesh deep through the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Reserve Chardonnay 2023(New Release), Our Price $77
Trophy Winner – Best Chardonnay, Royal Queensland Wine Award 2024
Trophy Winner – Best White Wine of the Show, Royal Queensland Wine Award 2024
Let’s cut to the chase. The finest Deep Woods chardonnay yet. It has it all. Great fruit has been harnessed with whole bunch pressing and fermentation in new and seasoned French oak. Further lees stirring has built in texture, contributing to a thoroughly beautiful, refined mouth feel. Opens with stone fruit and savoury light lemon curd aromas. Peels off into a palate that reveals more of a struck match and cracked seashell minerality complementing the outstanding fruit concentration. Super wine.
98 Points Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
Vine ripened tomatoes, green goddess, olive
3rd Course
Estate Shiraz et al 2023, Our Price $29
Oh, just wonderful. Captures the essence of this early drinking red wine style that has become such a winner for Deep Woods. It’s a blend of shiraz with malbec and grenache. So, it’s a sort of jumbled GSM with malbec instead of mourvedre. It’s so bright and vibrant with lively floral perfumed aromas and a delightful medium bodied palate of exquisite presence and balance. This is heady stuff screaming out for drinking over the next couple of years.

Reserve Shiraz 2022 (New Release), Our Price $77
Ray Jordan Best WA Shiraz, WA Wine Review 2024
This comes from a single block in Wilyabrup planted back in '72, so it's one of the oldest in the region. Excellent season has produced fruit of fine balance and poise. It's been captured in this super wine. The nose is fragrant with a spicy, licorice and plummy, blackberry thing happening. The palate has a grainy texture which is simply compelling. The flavour profile extends effortlessly to a very long finish I love this wine. One of the best.
98 Points Ray Jordan, WA Wine Review 2024
Pork sausage, pea pesto, mustard oil
4th Course
Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2020, Our Price $29
2020 was a glorious vintage and it's here for all to see. Structural, dense, concentrated and broody, the length of flavour tails out through the long finish – in fact, far longer than any $35 wine has any business being.
94 Points Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion (August 2022)
Single Vineyard G2 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022, Our Price $49
Top 25 Wines of WA, WA Good Food Guide 2024
So much Cabernet, so little time, Deep Woods have blocks all over the place and they're all of such good quality, eastern states growers must be weeping into their Riedels. If variety wasn't the spice of life, you could just drink WA and be happy.
94 Points Simon Hughes, Max Crus 2024
Single Vineyard Cabernet Malbec 2021, Our Price $49
The impact of the malbec on the nose is immediate with its rhubarb-like juby red notes. This is an elegantly crafted wine of medium body displaying attractive red fruit flavours. Freshy fruit within complemented by a chalky sinewy tannin edge. Oak has been well-managed to achieve an ideal balance.
92 Points Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
Twice cooked lamb, almond tarator, orange, leafy greens
5th Course
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 (New Release), Our Price $86
A high-class cabernet that comes from the old vines of Deep Woods Estate and Abbey Vale. Delightful florals on the nose merge with dark blackcurrant and lifted bay leaf and subtle olive tapenade nuances. The palate is a domain of control and poise with fine chalky tannins and ample well-weighted use of new and seasoned French oak. I love that compelling combination of polish and power with a body that leans slightly to medium weight but with deep concentration.

The reserve has its own DNA, with fruit off the original 1987-planted estate vines. Structured and compelling with a core of mint choc-coated fruit, baking spices and licorice. So much going on in this powerful wine, yet it is beautiful with fine-grained and plentiful tannins and a finish lingering oh-so-long. Drink by 2043.
97 Points Jane Faulkner - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 Magnum, Our Price $199
Gold – Perth Royal Wine Show 2021
From the estate's first plantings; matured for 18 months in new and used French oak. Deep, vivid crimson purple. Fascinating bouquet that has the bay leaf I often find on the back palate/finish of quality cabernet sauvignon; also cassis (no surprise) wrapped in a fine gauze of oak and pliable tannins. Line, length and balance are all attributes of a classic Margaret River cabernet. Drink by 2049.

In terms of vintage comparison, 2014 and 2012 were very similar. Both were warm and long, with no forced hands in relation to picking decisions and vineyard management. All of Block 3 went in to this wine, albeit a lower volume compared to the Abbey Vale component that filled the gaps. The 2014 vintage Cabernets are just so effortless and full of charm—I cannot overstate how much I love the wines of the 2014 vintage. It has the attraction and plushness of the 2012 vintage, but it has magic and charm that the 2012s can only dream of. The wine went on to win the 2016 Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at the Melbourne Wine Show, only the fifth time in the history of the trophy that Margaret River has brought home the trophy (the trophy is awarded to the best young red, one or two year old). The 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is fleshy and resplendent with red berries, salted licorice, loads of fresh cocoa nibs and a plethora of dark stone fruits (blood plum, black cherry, damsons). The tannins are everywhere in the mouth, marbled through the fruit, and it extends long through the finish. This is a super wine, with years to go. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
98 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate (July 2023)
