Pierro

One of Margaret River’s greatest chardonnay producers. Mike Peterkin combines lateral thinking with a
pragmatic approach to his viticulture and winemaking.
- James Halliday, Wine Companion Award 2024

How the critics see Pierro

"Pierro is one of the few Australian wineries that could claim to have established a trend that many others have followed. Since the mid-1980s Mike Peterkin has crafted a chardonnay of not only monumental power, but of simultaneously smooth and silky delivery. Pierro Chardonnay is the role model for so many of Australia's more opulent and hedonistically proportioned chardonnays and is a stunning expression of Margaret River chardonnay."
- Jeremy Oliver, Oliver WInes

“Refined and satisfying, the Pierro Chardonnay is infallibly consistent,
and it's a remarkable wine year on year.”
“Stylistically, the Pierro Chardonnay feels immune to the trends that have buffeted this grape in Australia over the years, and the persistence of the expression of this site in combination with the house style has been impressive to witness.”
- Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate

The Wine List & Menu

1st Course
'Blanc de Blancs' 2023, Our Price $36
LTC Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Our Price $38
50/43/7% semillon/sauvignon blanc/chardonnay. There’s a lot of energy and drive to this blend – it works so well. Enticing with its lemon-lime flavours, lemon zest and freshly sliced ginger/galangal. Some texture across the otherwise linear palate, electrifying acidity seals the deal.
95 Points Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (June 2024)
This is routinely one of the great wines of Margaret River. It's a quiet wine and perhaps doesn't get the public recognition that it deserves, but it has a long and loyal following among its fans, of whom I am one. So, on the nose of this 2023 L. T.C. is sandalwood, saffron, white pepper, enoki mushroom, fennel, white currant, salted almonds, a hint of macadamia and brine. It is gorgeous, and it ages brilliantly well. 2023 was a beautiful, mild, cool vintage, and the whites that we see released now are a pristine mirror of the conditions. This is no exception. YES.

Asparagus, goats curd, preserved lemon

2nd Course
Pierro Chenin Blanc 2022, Our Price $45
Oh, so easy to drink. This is a chenin from a small patch in the Pierro vineyard that is now quite mature. It’s a flinty dry style with slightly muted aromas but a palate that displays a driving apple and pear character with the lift of fine citrus and an ever so subtle grassy edge. Gradual flavour build-up then releases with energy. Has the fruit and acid to handle extended cellaring.

Chenin Blanc 2020, Our Price $45
Very light-yellow hue, with a savoury, straw-like bouquet and background dried florals. The palate is highly acidic and slightly nervy, the richness of the palate flavour going a fair way towards balancing it. There is a nutty character, possibly oak-derived. Very crisp, dry, lip-smacking acid finish. A lovely wine.

Abrolhos half shell scallops, nori, tobiko

3rd Course
Pierro ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay 2023, Our Price $112
This will sit alongside anything Peterkin has made in more than four decades as one of the finest winemakers in the region. It is a cracking good wine delivered with precision and power with a degree of delicacy and finesse that makes it so appealing. Incredible intensity on the nose with aromas of white peach and grapefruit with a little muted butterscotch in the background. The palate is powerful and drives with urgency through to a remarkably long finish. The oak is neatly interlaced, and the fresh acidity adds another dimension with its savoury chalky character.

Pierro ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay 2018, Sold Out
That balance between finesse, fruit flavour and flinty struck match is just so spot on here. White peach, ripe lime, cashew and fine spicy oak. It’s juicy and intense, subtle honey and lemon curd richness, cool clean acidity, flinty and electric, light toasty oak and matchstick layering in complexity, and a very long spiced and lime drizzled finish. Beautiful wine, and for my tastes, pretty much in the zone now and over the next few years.

Pierro ‘Vintage Reserve’ Chardonnay 2018, Sold Out
This is a thundering wine of booming power and length. It is characteristic of the 2018 vintage of course, but few people were able to extract this reverberating density of flavour. It is long. It is nuanced. It is not restrained. It is awesome. For all of the complexity and beauty of Pierro Chardonnay, it appears positively fine boned and delicate when tried alongside this VR. The length here is a tour de force ... it spools flavour, endlessly. It stains the mouth with it.
98 Points Erin Larkin, Halliday’s Wine Companion

Juniper rubbed quail, melted beetroot, rocket

4th Course
Pierro LTCF 2020, Our Price $45
Attractive as much as approachable for drinking now thanks to soft, fine tannins and a light spray of acidity across its less-than-medium-bodied palate. Delicately spiced, with fruit in the red spectrum, a dusting of pepper and licorice. Ready to be cracked open today.
93 Points Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (February 2024)
Pierro Reserve Cabernet Merlot 2020, Our Price $89
'There seems to be a lightness of touch to the '20 Pierro offerings. This is quiet and quite ethereal, laced with red currants and blueberries, cedary oak and spices, dark chocolate and forest floor aromas. A touch shy of medium bodied, the tannins are supple, there's chalky acidity throughout and a lot to like'
95 Points Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (June 2024)

Angus a la minute, sambal butter, leafy greens

5th Course
Pierro VR Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, Our Price $155
The 2018 vintage stands proud as one of the finest and when quality fruit comes in, what a sigh of relief. Cabernet sauvignon leads at 85% and petit verdot its dance partner at 15%; it stays in French oak (85% new) for 18 months. You wouldn’t know it as the oak is seamlessly integrated and shaped into the body of the wine. And true to Pierro style, it's medium weighted. Yes, some woodsy spices and cedary notes from the barrels but merely a seasoning; there’s a Chinese five-spice character, freshly rolled tobacco, mocha and cassis – complex and detailed. The palate is finely tuned from the lithe tannins to the finish.
96 Points Jane Faulkner, The Wine Companion
Pierro VR Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Our Price $155
Oh gosh, this is a seriously impressive ‘19 cabernet. Peterkin has used a small amount of petit verdot presumably to get some acid support. The palate is such a complex weave of blackcurrant, gamey meats and rich syrupy chocolate. Fine tannins with a chalky seashell minerality hold it to its line as it extends to its very long finish. Seamless with great power and supreme poise.
97 Points Ray Jordan, WA Wine Guide 2024
