DOMAINE AURÈLIEN VERDET

About Aurélien Verdet:
Aurélien Verdet embodies this new generation of talented winemakers who chooses to fly under the radar. We suspect that his wines won’t remain hidden gems for long.

Still flying under the radar, Aurélien Verdet’s Burgundies not to be missed. The purity and personality of the Pinot Noir demonstrates just how well he adapts to every vintage, reflecting the style of the season. His cellars are tucked away in the quiet village of Arcenant in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits and keeps a fairly low profile; he prefers to spend his time in his organically farmed vineyards. Father, Alain, planted the vineyards in 1971 and farmed them organically from the start, making them possibly the oldest organic vineyards in Burgundy. He has a range of excellent premiers crus, including contracts with vineyards across the Côte de Nuits. Aurélien’s wines offer  refreshingly good value.

The Bourgogne Rouge En Luteniere by Aurélien Verdet is an inspired, captivating red wine from Burgundy, France. It boasts a delightful complexity, presenting a compelling balance of cherries, strawberries and subtle oak influences. The palate is enriched by elegant tannins, crafting a wine boasting perfect balance. Earthy undertones contribute to its depth, followed by a long, vibrant finish.

2022 Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits Prieuré, Our Price $59
The 2022 Bourgogne Routes Cotes de Nuits Le Prieure has an attractive nose of macerated red cherries, crushed strawberry and light sous-bois scents. It just requires a little more intensity. The palate is a step-up: fine tannins, crisp red fruit, solid focus and a delicate but quite persistent finish. This is well-worth seeking out. Tasted at merchants’ 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.

2022 Marsannay Champs Perdrix, Our Price $81

2021 Cote de Nuits Village La Prêtière, Our Price $75
From vines very near to Nuits-St-Georges, here is sheer pinot delight that sums up 2021: lively freshness, structure and elegance. Deep, bright aromatic intensity showing expressive, expansive, blackberry fruit purity. Delight that sums up why Aurélien is so highly regarded in this region.

Wild mushrooms on the nose with brewed tea and cherry stones. Savory, pleasantly earthy and mellow, with a medium body and a bark-like bitterness that is quite attractive. Drink now.

2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges, Our Price $136
With its abundant black plum fruit aromas touched with earth, smoke and leather, this draws attention from the start. There is full body, firm, slightly grippy tannins and impressive length. It is blended from several parcels of organically certified vines at the base of the slope. Verdet is based in Arcenant in the Hautes-Côtes and this shows what he can do with top-quality fruit from further down the slope.

2021 Morey-Saint-Denis, Our Price $136
A deeply expressive Morey Villages giving notes of violets and white pepper in a comparatively powerful pinot that is full of character. Wonderfully spicy element so typical of the commune’s wines and here one with added aromatic flourish. Quite superb.

2021 Gevrey Chambertin, Our Price $149

2021 Vosne Romanée Vieilles Vignes, Our Price $198
Velvety raspberry coulis and white chocolate; a beautifully structured, textbook Vosne and one to again demonstrate Aurélien’s deep understanding of terroir. A Vosne to age well.

2021 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er cru 'Les Monts Luisants', Our Price $259
Lovely juicy core of fruit, dense and powerful with broad shoulders and an understated yet firm structure, this is a broad-shouldered Morey St Denis from the rare 1er Cru Aux Monts Luisants vineyard in Morey-St-Denis which boasts a superb position just above and as an enclave within the lauded Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. Spicy yet with a delicious core of juicy rich fruit, a lverlvety texture and a long, multi-layered finish, this is a very pleasant and complex 1er Cru.

2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru 'Damodes', Our Price $236
Ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit is matched by sweet spices in this fleshy, fluid red. This is firmly structured, darkening on the finish, with flashes of sandalwood, incense and earth. Needs time to absorb the tannins. Best from 2027 through 2045.
93 points, Decanter (BS)
