Duke’s Vineyard
Ben Cane and his partner Sarah Date purchased Duke's Vineyard when founders Duke and Hilde Ranson decided to retire in 2022. Ben, previously the chief winemaker at top labels in Australia and California, was honored to be entrusted by Duke to continue running this family-owned operation renowned for putting Great Southern Rieslings on the map.
Duke's Vineyard was awarded the industry's most prestigious prize when the 2017 Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling was named Australian Wine of the Year by James Halliday in 2019. It was the first time a white wine scored 99 out of 100 points and helped cement the reputation of Western Australia's Great Southern as one of Australia's top regions for Riesling.

Invitational Shiraz Riesling (Chilled Red) 2023, Our Price $33
85.5/14.5% shiraz/riesling from 2023/2024 fruit, respectively. It's a bright and fresh, lighter-weight red wine with crunchy texture, red cherry, raspberry, pepper and minty elements joined by some mocha-choc powder elements, licorice and a curious, almost mandarin sweet-sour element. In all this, an original wine, vivacious and fun, though firm tannin profile and woody spices do reduce some of the energy of the wine. That being said, a warm day and a good chill and this wine is good to go.

Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling 2021, Our Price $63
From a single vineyard, whole-bunch pressed and fermented solely in tank to preserve the pristine freshness endemic to the rieslings from the area. A super-floral nose leads into a tense and citrus-driven palate. The acidity is saline and omnipresent, curling and flicking around the fruit, shaping it all through the long finish. This has already developed and grown so much in the bottle between this glass and the last (a couple of months prior), that it surely has a very long road ahead of it. White pepper, lime flesh and laser-like precision through the finish. Layered and dappled – gorgeous.

Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling 2022, Our Price $39
The intensity of the Rieslings from this Porongurup vineyard is quite remarkable. I don’t think there is a more powerful and intense Riesling made in the State. The aroma has a spiciness that sits comfortably with the floral spicy lemon zip. Sustained and coiled tensile palate that extends to a brilliantly long finish.
97 Points, Ray Jordan, WA Wine Review 2023
One year down the track this is becoming round, balanced and with long balanced Riesling fruit behind the age worthy and lingering and crisp acid influenced finish and aftertaste. This is blossoming. Another one of Australia’s finest. 19 points. JJ
Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling 2023, Our Price $39
Now firmly established as one of a handful of Australia's greatest rieslings. This is another beautiful wine. It's slightly friendlier than the awesome '22, but lacks nothing in intensity and drive. Fine lift of wet granite, crunchy quartz and fine lemon and spicy pear on the nose. The palate is so complex and intricately woven with passionfruit, guava, green apple skin and light talcy bath salts. Fine with a precise fine acidity extending to a relentless finish.

Wow. A fragrant, lively, fresh mouth full of delicious and exciting flavours – of enormous length. A touch more generosity than previously. This is a crowd pleaser. I believe that our customers will love it.

Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling 2024, Our Price $39
Hand picked, chilled, pressed to stainless steel tank, fermented using selected yeast, left on lees for 2 months and bottled. It's got flavour and character, albeit a little diffuse in personality from this warmer, earlier vintage. That being said, lovely iterations of lemon-lime citrus, green apple, a whisper of ginger, some jasmine florals and a touch of exotic green tea character in there, too. The wine shows some decent intensity of grapefruit acidity, a freshening rod through more pulpy yet pleasing fruit character. The finish offers up some floral, yeasty notes that linger into biscuity layers of flavour. Lots of easy pleasure here.

Invitational Margaret River Chardonnay 2023 (New Release), Our Price $51
Invitational Margaret River Chardonnay 2022, Our Price $59
Light-medium yellow and bright in the glass; intense grapefruit, sweet-herb and lemon-balm aromas overlaid by a nutty, peanut brittle trace from oak-maturation. The wine remains delicate, reserved and refined in the mouth, with excellent line and length. Intense, concentrated lemon/citrus fruit. An impressive young chardonnay that will certainly age superbly. A stunner.

Single Vineyard Shiraz 2023 (New Release), Our Price $24
Magpie Hill Shiraz 2021, Our Price $39
Ripe and generous with opulent rich fruit. It certainly is a step up from the very good Single Vineyard Shiraz loaded with ripe juicy plummy fruit underpinned by a chalky tannin precision. The sweet fruit is given a little boost with the sprinkle of spices and dried herbs, while the French oak management is right on the money. The smooth and seamless palate is a joy.

Magpie Hill Shiraz 2022, Our Price $39
Deep-ish red with a good purple tint; the bouquet spicy and cool-grown, elegant and fine, with a medium bodied palate of real elegance and style, fine texture and really refreshing acidity. A seriously lovely wine that is drinking superbly already. Not a try-hard, but beautifully balanced and stylish.

Whole Bunch Shiraz 2021, Our price $57
This is a result of an experiment that started in 2018. It was foot stomped, and no new oak used. It’s made with a Pinot Noir approach and as a result has a lovely Pinot like weight and perfume. It’s fresh and slightly sappy with grainy tannins and a firmish core. It’s made as a delicate and aromatic expression of Shiraz, yet it has the structure to handle extended cellaring. I have to say I like the wine a lot.

Magpie Hill Reserve Cabernet 2021, Our Price $39
There is power and intensity coursing through every part of the wine. The tannins are firm but there is a deep core of fruit to balance. It’s medium to full bodied reflecting its cool climate origins, but there is power and poise. At the moment it’s quite closed but with a little time it will certainly reveal plenty more. The finish has a slightly chalky aspirin-like character to provide focus and direction.

Magpie Hill Reserve Cabernet 2017, Our Price $
Like the single vineyard wine in many ways with the sweet core of bright black and red fruit, that gives that bright fresh acidity, but with added depth, concentration of fruit. Tannins are similarly very fine and soft. Lovely and plush.
