The Wine List & Menu (TBC)

1st Bracket
Riesling 2024, Our Price $25
Has a distinctive lemony and slightly talcy aroma. It’s 70% Mount Barker and 30% Porongurup fruit. The Porongurup component gives it the edginess and palate tension, adding to its precision and focus. The palate has intensity and flavour with plenty of fruit depth and its slightly more generous mouth feel is a product of this very warm vintage. It’s dry but there is the suggestion of fruit sweetness adding to its appeal.

Sauvignon Blanc 2024, Our Price $25
An excellent Porongurup savvy. It’s textured and flavoursome with a melon edge to the tropical fruit. Has 50% old puncheon fermentation and the rest stainless steel, which shows in the textured mouthfeel and palate structure. The approach has muted the primary punchy fruit characters creating a wine of complexity and interest. Love this wine with its aromatics and acid profile.

Pinot Grigio 2024, Our Price $25
This is 100% Mount Barker fruit showing aromas of pear and apple with a little pastry crumble. It’s pleasing and crunchy with lift fruit intensity. Has a nice fruit texture which comes from its time on lees. Just stainless steel, but three months were spent on lees with an initial stirring regime. Love the lemony citrus tang on the finish.

Bou-Ju Grenache Mourvedre Rosé 2023, Our Price $29
This grenache mourvedre from Frankland River was all handpicked before fermentation in and maturation in concrete. It comes off the Swinney Powderbark vineyard. Love the texture and mouth feel in this. It has weight and elegance with a slightly savoury rustic character. It’s the palest of colours – onion skin blush. Impressive rose.

2nd Bracket
Karriview Chardonnay 2023, Our Price $66
This is a supreme example of Denmark chardonnay from this supreme vintage. Opens with a striking minerally oyster shell aroma with a slightly briny character. This comes off the Karriview vineyard which also provides fruit for the Loam. It was all handpicked and was pressed into tight grained barriques. Interestingly it is one of the few Australian chardonnays using 100% new oak. It’s steely and tight with power and driving intensity. Subtle melon and grainy character with just a faint background of struck match.

Loam Chardonnay 2023, Our Price $222
This is something of a breakthrough chardonnay from Denmark. It joins some other outstanding wines being produced in this subregion, but when you take in the price Nelson is making a real statement…and why not. It comes off the Karriview vineyard and was picked from selected vines with just enough to make one barrel. Basked pressed to oak and then racked to stainless steel for 100% malo and then aged on lees. There is power and delicacy here with tremendous depth and intensity but delivered with finesse. Has a slightly salty oyster shell minerality and a little edge of lime. The saline savoury character picks up on the finish. Love this wine.

3rd Bracket
Karriview Pinot Noir 2023, Our Price $66
This vineyard was a great investment by Paul Nelson. It is starting to produce some really outstanding wines. This is certainly one of them. It was 20% whole bunch in fermentation and hand plunged. Had three weeks on skins and then basket pressed to a mix of new puncheons and older barriques. Has a beautiful talcy feel on the palate. The fruit is upfront and slightly darker and less dusty than is normal at Karriview. It is very much fruits of the forest. The tannins are firmish and supportive but not intrusive. It’s a powerhouse wine. Delivers with great polish.

Loam Pinot Noir 2023, Our Price $132
97 Points Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
A solid evolution in the LOAM series, and this year is a solid step forward. From one of the best Syrah appellations in Australia, this wine emphatically stamps its authority. A deep ruby and soulful hue. The palate is laden with dark fruits, graphite, ironstone, and dark pepper. Medium to full bodied, there are multiple dimensions to explore as the silky tannins and oak layer each sip with an extraordinary poise that will evolve over time. - Winery Notes

4th Bracket
Shiraz 2023, Our Price $28

About Paul Nelson
Paul was born and raised in Western Australia, where he worked on the family vineyard as a kid. It was no surprise when he went on to study Viticulture and Oenology when he left school. But on a college trip to France, he was seduced by the history, passion and romance of winemaking and changed course to be a winemaker instead of a grower.

Paul spent his first two vintages with famous large winemakers Houghtons and Goundreys. The path of winemaking then led him overseas doing vintages in every nook and cranny from California to Stellenbosch, Germany to Cyprus, and Italy to India.

Ask Paul what’s so special about winemaking and he’ll tell you “You can create something that perfectly captures the essence of the vintage from a simple bunch of grapes and lock it in a bottle to be released sometime somewhere else in the world. It’s almost magical.”

Karriview Vineyard

Karriview is the oldest producing vineyard in Denmark. Planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1986, the vineyard faces North on dolerite slopes. The Karri loam and gravelly soils are deep and fertile offering the unirrigated vines a wealth of nutrition. The vines are self-regulating and continue to produce some of the most expressive and outstanding fruit in the Great Southern. Each vintage is unreplicable and each bottle of wine tells a story of that year and the season from which it emerged. A true expression of this unique site.

His first year as a go-it-alone winemaker saw his winery listed as a James Halliday Top 10 best new winery and Dark Horse winery. In 2013 Paul and his wife bought the oldest vineyard and cellar door in Denmark (WA), but his volumes were still only very small.

Getting Naked in 2015 was life changing for them. Not only has it given Paul a chance to express his winemaking philosophy and showcase his unique region to many more wine lovers than he thought possible, it’s given him access to vineyards not usually within his reach. He's now just added one of the oldest of them in Mt Barker to his own blossoming portfolio.
