The Swinney Farvie ‘Syrah’ 2022 takes top spot in Max Allen’s recent article on Australian Syrah JancisRobinson.com.

“These days, more and more producers of Australian Shiraz are choosing to call their wines Syrah with good reason, because the wines inside the bottles do indeed align with what the name suggests: they’re more medium-bodied, spicier and more floral in aromatic profile, with finer, more sinewy tannins – all characteristics that are potentially favoured in a cooler vintage.

Good examples of Australian Syrah tend to come from cooler, higher regions such as southern Victoria, Beechworth, Canberra and the Adelaide Hills. They usually sit closer to 13% than 14% alcohol, often include a significant proportion of whole bunches in the ferment and seldom see much – or any – new-oak maturation.”

For me, this is the best of the three single-block, single-varietal reds – Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre – released under Swinney’s top, Farvie label from 2022 (in previous vintages the Grenache has often been the standout). Ambient-yeast fermented in oak vat and demi-muids, 65% whole bunch, 14 months in seasoned large-format oak before bottling.

This is a very arresting and confident wine, a textbook expression of Syrah, with lifted dark swirling aromas of spice and a twist of iodine, then tangy, sinewy, spicy, black-fruited and glossy in the mouth, finishing with long, well-framed tannins.

“The best wines you make are the ones you have to do the least amount to,” notes Mann, echoing a similar quote from Dominique Lafon: “A winemaker must have the courage to do nothing”.
