“One of the stars is Rocche di Castiglione. The wines from this small sliver of vineyards are consistently superb in 2020. Castiglione Falletto is often described as a sort of center for Barolo, the place where a rich mélange of the lighter, sandier soils of La Morra and Verduno mix with the older and more compact soils of Monforte and Serralunga in well-exposed hillside sites. Whether or not that is more romance than fact can be debated. However, the wines I tasted from this sector were consistently brilliant.”

Vietti (Castiglione Falletto) - Vietti was among the first wineries to produce a single vineyard Barolo - Rocche from the 1961 vintage - and today, the winery makes as many as four cru Barolo per year, in addition to a splendid riserva from the Villero vineyard in exceptional vintages, as well as a classic Barolo named Castiglione, that is an outstanding value. Luca Currado, one of the most charming people you will ever meet, learned the fundamental nature of Barolo from his father Alfredo, and today, he has elevated Vietti to the category of outstanding Barolo producers.

Floral, fruity, and appealing, the 2020 Barolo Castiglione is the calling card of the estate for the entry to the Barolo range. Emblematic of the vintage, it’s appealing upfront, with aromas of cherry candies, crushed flowers, apricots, and dusty earth. On the palate, it offers sweet tannins, fresh acidity, and a clean finish, with nothing heavy. It is a lovely and easy-drinking wine already, but it doesn’t lack Nebbiolo character. This will be a wine to snap up on restaurant lists for its value and approachability.

Impressive depth of color and brightness from this Cerequio that comes with so much fruit. So fragrant and complex. Fresh brambly raspberries, red cherries, grapefruit and mineral. Pure, ripe and racy, with fully resolved tannins and a tense, compact finish. Expressive and impressive! Vegan. Already approachable for the depth of fruit, but better from 2027 for additional complexity.

There is a little more savoriness here, showing contained power. Tar and dark minerality. Plenty of forest berries, dried orange peel, frozen grapefruit and raspberries. Very structured and full-bodied, with firm, chewy tannins rendering the bold austere quality to the wine. But at the end, this is focused and taut, with a crunchy, spicy finish full of length. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drinkable now if you are willing to embrace austerity, but this should be better from 2027.

One of the palest and most perfumed Barolos from Vietti with a transparent, ruby-orange hue. This is a super nuanced, elegant, expressive and ethereal Monvigliero that grows on me, with enchanting notes of grilled grapefruit, thyme, frozen raspberries and mineral. A subtle splash of white pepper and mezcal-like smokiness. Really refined and transparent, with some citrus and mineral tensions that are closely knit with the fine, crumbled tannins. So much finesse and detail here, and its complexity will continue to unwind. Really composed, soulful and mind-blowing! An otherworldly, idiosyncratic Barolo that actually reminded me of the finest Gredo garnacha. A big wow that deserves attention. Vegan. Best with a Burgundy glass.

A medium ruby color, the 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja comes from vines planted in 1968. It opens in the glass with notes of wild strawberries, crushed roses, leather, and stony earth. Medium-bodied, it has more complexity and good balance, with notes of incense lasting long on the finish. Elegant and refined, with another layer of distinction, it’s going to be a lovely wine to enjoy over the next two or more decades.

In general, the 2020s are have less complexity than more classic vintages. Most are also more lightly colored than usual, but don’t let that fool you, they still boast underlying structure and concentration as well as elegance…

“Grace, elegance and understatement are some of the qualities readers will find in the 2020 Barolos. The best wines are undeniably striking. That said, the vintage is not an unqualified success, as the growing season presented its fair share of challenges. Overall, 2020 is a vintage of mid-weight Barolos. These are wines to admire for their balance and seductive appeal more than their power or structure… the best 2020 Barolos offer exquisite balance, tons of class and plenty of up-front appeal. In the previous generation, a forward vintage often meant soft, fruity wines. In 2020, however, those qualities come through in mid-weight wines endowed with gorgeous translucence and plenty of classicism. The 2020s clearly don’t have the energy or structure of truly important vintages, but the best wines are nonetheless quite appealing.
In many ways 2020 reminds me of 2012, but with greater energy and nuance that is likely the result of a combination of the year itself and an evolution in the way growers work in the field and in the cellar aimed at producing wines of greater energy and tension than the past.

About Vietti:
In 2016 , the winery was purchased by the Krause family. Once again, it was the intuitions of man that made the difference. Kyle Krause decided to extend the wine-growing properties with new, renowned Crus in both the Barolo and Barbaresco denominations. Timorasso was also added to these, thanks to the purchase of plots and vineyards in the Colli Tortonesi.
At the beginning of 2023 , Luca Currado Vietti, together with his wife Elena, leaves the winery. The legacy is collected by the Krause family, already owners since 2016, standard-bearer of the new future of the Vietti brand.
As the seasons progressed, the company also grew and the focus on improvement soon became a true distinctive style of the winery. Just like the selection and care in the vineyard. Today Vietti counts within its heritage some of the most prestigious and representative vineyards of the Barolo and Barbaresco area.
Vietti maintains, today as then, those founding values, the same ones that first inspired Carlo Vietti and then all his successors. It looks to the future with even more promising and stimulating prospects. Each wine is the result of an artisanal work of understanding and interpretation of each individual terroir. Vietti is thus the place where the intelligence of the hands, applied in the vineyard and in the cellar, meets the vision.
