2008 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes
Domaine Leflaive takes center stage in the pantheon of truly great white Burgundy producers.
Domaine Leflaive is the most prestigious winery in Puligny-Montrachet, boasting a supreme portfolio of vineyard holdings, including five hectares of 1er Cru and 13 acres of Grand Cru. The Domaine heralds from 1717, yet the family line traces back to Joseph Leflaive (1870-1953).
“This is quite simply an extraordinary wine and it is not an exaggeration to say that the '08 is the best young Leflaive Combettes that I have ever seen.”

94 Points, Outstanding - Allen Meadows – Burghound
Readers may remember that last year the '08 Combettes had not even started its malo at the time of my February visit (more than 16 months after the harvest!) and thus it was not rated. Well, I am very happy to report that it has turned out marvelously well with an ultra-fresh nose of mildly exotic yellow orchard fruit aromas trimmed in floral and wood components. There is excellent richness, size, weight and punch to the medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract that both coats the palate and buffers the very firm acidity on the driving, even explosive finish that is stunningly long. This is quite simply an extraordinary wine and it is not an exaggeration to say that the '08 is the best young Leflaive Combettes that I have ever seen.
94 Points - Wine & Spirits Magazine
The domaine farms 1.8 acres in this cru bordering Meursault, the vines planted in 1963 and 1973. This vintage is on the rich side of Puligny, scented with custard apple and lemon curd, deepening to laser-like minerality as it opens over the course of several days. The pale peach flavors are mouthwatering, as if you can feel the humidity of the earth coming through the wine. As the wine develops, it captures the essence of Puligny, the upward reach of wildflowers and the gravity of limestone. The vintage's creaminess and elevated acidity are completely integrated, making this delicious to decant for white salmon sashimi today; it will be only more glorious with ten years of age.
