1996 Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru
94 points - Bruce Sanders, Wine Spectator
Stunning. Massive and backward, this young '96 Pinot begins with seductive aromas of blackberries and vanilla and a sauvage element, then saturates the palate with its intense concentration of blackberry, black currant and smoky oak flavors before yielding to the stiff tannins. A great Nuits from a vintage where this commune excelled.
88-90 points - Rob Parker’s Wine Advocate (June 2003)
This bright, medium-to-dark ruby-colored wine is produced from 60 year old vines. It displays blueberries, and black and purple fruits dusted with minerals, cracked black pepper, and spices, as well as a medium-to-full-bodied, juicy, broad, and masculine personality. This foursquare and oily-textured wine has iron, steel, earth, and blackberry flavors, and a firm finish. It is a structured and tannic (again, not problematic) Nuits that will require cellaring
Int'l Wine Cellar
Deep ruby-red. Aromas of plum, cassis, minerals and spices on the nose. Very bright, pure and focused in the mouth, but far less forthcoming than the village wine. The substantial tannins coat the entire tongue, and today have the effect of shortening the wine's fruit. But this extremely fresh wine is built to reward aging.
