1995 Penfolds BIN 389 Cabernet Shiraz
92 points - Jeremy Oliver, Oliver’s Wines
92 points - James Halliday, The Wine Companion
Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet is rich, with berry, chocolate and some vanilla oak inputs. The palate has abundant flavour with chocolate and dark berry fruit flavours woven through with soft, lingering tannins.
90 points - Tom Cannavan (1998)
Gorgeous depth on the nose - dense black fruits, sweet oak, spice, nutmeg and clove. A leathery, sun-baked quality too, but not at all stale - very fresh and appetising. Tremendously round, big and oaky wine at the moment, with mouth-coating tannins, structure and great length. A very good 389 in the making I'd guess.
Penfolds Overview:
Commonly referred to as 'poor man's Grange' due to the use of former Grange barrels in its maturation, and its age old reputation for value for money.
Bin 389 is a very traditional Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and today it is truly a multi regional blend drawing from as many as seven different regions depending on the vintage. Although quite different to Grange it is unmistakably Penfolds in style, with fleshy, ripe fruit flavours and charry oak.
