 About Evans & Tate…

Evans & Tate was founded in the early '70s when its prized Redbrook Vineyard was established at Wilyabrup. In '87 they released the Margaret River Classic Semillon Sauvignon blend, which morphed into the best-selling wine from the region. The brand’s success as a producer of note has ebbed and flowed over the years, but there is stability now thanks to Fogarty Wine Group taking full ownership – they've injected much-needed funds into vineyard rejuvenation and new plantings. There’s a renewed sense of enthusiasm and optimism, and while senior winemaker Matt Byrne has been a steady influence, winemaker Feleasha Prendergast is bringing a fresh perspective, too. Volumes have increased to feed an array of labels but its premium wines under the Redbrook range have never been better. It bodes well.
With over 50 years of rich history, Evans & Tate is regarded as one of Margaret River’s pioneering wineries, consistently producing stand-out wines of unmatched quality. Senior Winemaker Matt Byrne has been at the helm of the winery for over two decades and has an innate knowledge of the region and a huge passion for Evans & Tate wines. The winery is highly awarded with a multitude of gold medals and trophies from prestigious wine shows at home and across the globe. As one of Western Australia’s most beloved and trusted wineries, Evans & Tate remains true to the very essence of Margaret River with outstanding wines continuing to celebrate elegant and distinctive expressions of the region’s best fruit.

The Wine List & Menu

On Arrival
Wild Cape Sauvignon Blanc 2022, Our Price $15
While there’s no question that this is sauvignon blanc, it’s not over-the-top with its tropical fruit profile. Some passionfruit and herbaceous notes but it's also citrusy and tangy. Lively acidity and refreshing all the way through.
88 Points Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (July 2023)

‘Ellens Estate’ Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2022, Our Price $34
Redbrook Estate Chardonnay 2022, Our Price $39
Redbrook Estate Chardonnay 2019, Our Price $39
Wild ferment, mlf blocked, matured for 10 months in barrel and a further 6 months in tank on lees. A reliably brilliant wine, this year is no exception. Classy fruit collides with toasty oak, all of it punctuated by bright acidity and fine texture. Super-smart+.

A wine that bridges that divide between power and elegance, delivering a wonderfully precise and finely focused wine. On the nose a trace of wild ferment struck match releases. The palate then takes charge with a fine chalky edge against a backdrop of grapefruit and cashew with a lift of pear. Has a crunchy saline character to finish. As good as any from E&T.

Oh wow. There is almost a pretty delicacy about this excellent Chardonnay at first then the awesome power kicks in and starts its relentless drive to that super long finish. Has a crunchy juicy mid palate with fine chalky acidity and a fine citrus tang balancing the complex savoury notes. Finishes dry and long.

Deep, bright red-purple colour, fresh aromas of cassis, cedar and mulberry, classic cabernet, with soft tannins running the full length of the palate, and good medium intensity of strongly varietal fruit. The tannin fills out the finish while the fruit drops away slightly.

While cabernet sauvignon and merlot are stamped on the label, apparently cabernet franc and malbec are in the mix, percentages unknown even if the latter adds lots of its positive attributes to the wine. A dark red/inky hue laden with mulberries, plums, cassis and a baker’s cupboard full of spices with wafts of tobacco, menthol/eucalyptus. Full bodied and densely packed with flavour and no shortage of structure or tannins. If you imagine being at a rave, this wine is the DJ mixing it right up.
95 Points Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (August 2023)

Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 (Pre-Release), Our Price $72
Trophy Winner – ‘Best Older Red’ Wine Show of Western Australia 2024
A commanding wine that’s built with ample tannins, a structured full-bodied palate and little wriggle room in this youthful stage. There’s plenty of flavour, all cassis, mulberries, charry oak, fresh herbs and a dusting of warm spices. It’s very good but another year or so in bottle will allow this to loosen up.
95 Points Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (May 2024)
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Our Price $72
Gold - Wine Show of Western Australia 2024
Here’s some advice: decant this then prepare dinner, maybe a rack of lamb or roast beef, lots of roasted vegetables including beetroot, gather friends for a feast and pour the wine. It should have unfurled in the time it took to do the aforementioned. Wonderful fragrance and flavours of mulberries, cranberries, cinnamon and plenty of cedary/woodsy spices from the oak. It’s full bodied, densely packed with flavour and has no shortage of tannins, albeit ripe and grainy tannins in a youthful context. Its best days are ahead of it.

Okay, here's the thing. I loved this wine when first tasted last year and gave it very high points. But the extra year has revealed even more and has prompted me to add another notch to the score. Most noticeably a glorious, perfumed fragrance has emerged. It's from the wonderful 2018 vintage, which continues to amaze with its red wines in particular. Leafy black fruits on the nose with a trace of brick dust and bay leaf, black olive. The palate is smooth and seamlessly structured with fine minerally tannins. A super wine with years ahead of it.
97 Points Ray Jordan Wine Guide 2024

Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Our Price $165
Deep, vibrant garnet; the bouquet offers a complex array of red and black fruits, crushed leaf, cigar box and violets; medium to full-bodied with a gorgeous silky texture; fine-grained tannins coat the mouth as the fruit slowly reveals with the zesty acidity providing cut and thrust; long, layered and supremely age worthy.

Redbrook Estate Shiraz 2023 (Pre-Release) , Our Price $39
Redbrook Estate Shiraz 2022, Our Price $39

Gold - Decanter World Wine Awards 2024
Gold - Wine Show of Western Australia 2024
Gold - Royal Hobart Wine Show 2023
There’s ample bold fruit flavour here but the tannin is well-finessed through the finish, and it’s the latter reason that really elevates it. Sweet raspberry, toast, plum, marshmallow and black cherry flavours are served ripe and generous, before a gorgeous curl of tannin manages the exit. Yes this is at the bolder end of the Margaret River Shiraz spectrum but there’s some high grade scaffolding here, and it works.
94 Points Gary Walsh, The Wine Front (July 2024)
"Stacked with vivid red berry, plum and raspberry fruit with enthralling tannins and a fresh lift of verdant acidity. Full and voluptuous with a floral violet finish."
Decanter World Wine Award 2024
Redbrook Estate Shiraz 2012 , Our Price $135
Deepish red purple colour and a fresh, clean, sweet raspberry conserve aroma, starting to build some secondary aged complexities. The wine is savoury, dry and elegant with a ripe raspberry fruit palate and fine balance of fine-grained tannins. The taut, elegant, restrained fruit is beginning to mature. A touch of leather. Fine, elegant and long. Lovely drinking.
