The Producers Background Information & Context
-
Xavier Durand began his winemaking career in style. His first vintage after taking on the family domaine in Comblanchien was the highly acclaimed 2009. He got rid of all rented vines, concentrating on the seven hectares of owned vines.
– The domaine dates back to my grandfather Alexis, says Xavier Durand. He bought the vines in the Côte de Nuits-Villages, the Bourgogne and the Ladoix appellations. Then my father René added the Corton in 1984 and the Aloxe-Corton in 1985.
Despite being located right in the middle of the Côte d'Or this is a relatively unknown village. Comblanchien and its two neighbours – Prémeaux-Prissey to the north and Corgoloin to the north – form the southern end of the Côte de Nuits. None of them has an appellation of its own. While Prémeaux-Prissey is the home of some of the Nuits-Saint-Georges premier crus – most notably the Clos de la Maréchale – the other two villages have to share the Côte de Nuits-Villages appellation with two villages at the top of the Côte de Nuits – Fixin and Brochon.
– Since I took on the domaine in 2009 I have added some Nuits-Saint-Georges. It's village appellation, in Les Charmois, just behind the village, says Xavier Durand. I have also bought some more Aloxe-Corton, this time in Les Chaillots, which is just below Chateau d'Aloxe-Corton. I have also made a lot of investments, I have been buying a lot of new equipment. For example, I am now working by gravity.
The vines at Domaine Xavier Durand are between 35 and 80 years old. All wines are vinified exactly the same way, from the generic Bourgogne rouge up to the grand cru Corton Rognet.

After having studied with David Duband, Aurélien Verdet decided to take over the family estate in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, and rather with some success. Inspired by the principles of organic viticulture, pioneered by his father in the 1970s, he produces high quality wines in all humility and with admirable panache. This talented young winemaker enchanted us with his kindness and the quality of his wines. All is well ! A beautiful domain full of future!

Aurélien Verdet embodies this new generation of talented winemakers who chooses to fly under the radar. We suspect that his wines won’t remain hidden gems for long.
Vinosophy.comAurélien Vedret is a vigneron who inherited from his father not only the cellar, but above all the passion for organic farming and a respectful vinification of the product. Fermentation takes hold thanks to indigenous yeasts, the use of sulphites is moderate and the aging in wood takes place in Burgundy oak barrels with wood from Tronçais and Vosges.

Established in 1720 in Meursault Domaine Jean Monnier is one of the oldest established properties in Burgundy, but current owner Nicolas Monnier’s family has been involved in the trade far longer - he is a 16th-generation winemaker.
The estate is composed of 17 hectares with parcels in Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard and Beaune, planted primarily with old vines ranging from 25 to 60 years of age.Monnier is one of the few producers in Meursault to produce equal amounts of white and red wines. The whites are complex and rich due to prolonged lees contact in oak, followed by 12 to 18 months maturation before being bottled. In order to extract as much fruit as possible, Nicolas does a cold maceration for his reds prior to oak ageing, a modern technique that has enhanced the quality of the wines. The Puligny-Montrachet is sourced from a single plot of marly brown limestone and treated to an extended fermentation in stainless steel. The Meursault Vieilles Vignes is a blend of old vines from the lieux-dits of La Barre, Clos du Cromin, and Chevalière, composed of Jurassic marls and fossil limestone.
soilarselection.comThe Monnier family has been cultivating wine in Meursault since 1720. The trade has always been passed from father to son. Today, the family with father Jean-Claude and son Nicolas cultivates 16 hectares of vineyards. A peculiarity of the winery is that it is one of the few on the Côte de Meursault to produce both red and white wines. The old family cellars are still standing and are still used as such.

Founded in the late 1970s by Michel Morey (son of the late Marc Morey) and wife Fabienne (from the Pillot clan). Their son, Thibault took over the helm of the estate in 2009. Thibault joins a long lineage of winemakers in Chassagne-Montrachet with great gravitas in their family names such as Pillot, Morey, and Coffinet. In 2014, he began to pursue biodynamic viticulture, gaining certification in 2015. A solid foundation of 1er Crus come from the southeast-facing hillside; the whites reflect the very essence of Chassagne with fragrant aromatics framed around powerful minerality, while the reds hone-in on terroirrevealing roasted, muscular aromas while displaying silky texture and balance.
domainemoreycoffinet.comThe vineyards that Thibaut Morey manages, located in some of the most hallowed spots in Burgundy, descend from the holdings of two important figures in the history of Chassagne-Montrachet: Marc Morey and Fernand Coffinet. The domaine that joins their names doesn’t just ride the coattails of a prestigious history however: Thibaut has taken steps to convert his vineyards to organic farming methods (certified organic as of 2018) and to carefully match the aging process to the particular character of the fruit. Certified organic.
Atlas Fine WinesWe discovered the wines of this Chassagne-Montrachet rising star (established in its current form “only” 30 years ago, although the family cellars date from the 16th century) for the first time in 2020, and although we were immediately impressed by the portfolio of great vineyards the Morey family cultivate, it was upon tasting the wines with Thibault Morey that we fell in love with them. The estate is run according to biodynamic principles throughout. Thibault is one of the new generation of winemakers who, through precise, rigorous work and an open mind not only to traditional and modern techniques but also to different expressions of the Burgundy terroirs, produce truly exciting wines. These are wines that combine richness and power with complexity and elegance effortlessly, and they come highly recommended.
With a superb intensity of citrus fruit dominating its core, this village cuvée shows particularly impressive balance and body: round, rich, long and a gorgeously seductive fruit profile that finishes very cleanly and in great freshness.

Chanzy has 80 hectares of vineyards and also has prestige appellations from Côte Chalonnaise. (They are the …) Owner of … 2 monopolies, 11 grands crus and 13 premier cru (sites and the grapes …) are produced in the greatest respect of the Burgundy tradition. Chanzy also holds the sole monopoly of the appellation Bouzeron Village: the Clos de la Fortune, a jewel of the AOC of 2.97 hectares of vines.”

“The greatest value and the most approachable Burgundies that I have tasted in my 12-25 days a year in Beaune over the past 16 years.”
- JJI have visited Chanzy four times over the past 5 years, and each time have been astounded at the high and modern quality of both their White and Red Burgundies. On each visit, I was asked to pick up the agency for Australia, but knocked this offer back on the grounds that they were so good - and in the more reasonably priced instances, such good value - that they deserved a national distributor … and we are mere a tiny restaurant retail group in the isolated Western Australia.
I.e. both the red and white reasonably priced appellations
have marvellous quality fruit for these appellations, are brilliantly made and are great value.

As you would expect if you live in such a tiny community for generations, Emmanuel “Manny” Humbert and his brother are related to many of the most famous families in Gevrey Chambertin and through the French inheritance laws, as you would understand, share many of the same vineyards with their cousins.
JJ
The Humbert brothers , Frédéric and Emmanuel, have wine in their blood and land in their hearts. Men of few words, but always fair and profound, they alone embody good peasant sense, or rather winegrower. The vinification are traditional, destemmed grapes, punching down and regular pumping over rather long vatting. The wines are made for laying down and express themselves marvellously after a few years of ageing.
Magnumdevin.com
“I have said this repeatedly, but I will say it again: if you're not familiar with the Humbert wines then you are in for a treat as the wines are flat-out terrific. There is a purity to the wines that is really lovely and, while there is a nod towards the modern, the wines are also made with a significant percentage of stems. Overall, the wines are at once stylish and beautifully rendered with outstanding transparency. Take a look at the Humbert wines: you'll thank me.”

“The always thoughtful and almost shy Vincent Rapet directs this 20+ ha domaine that is split roughly 50/50 between the production of reds and whites …”
Burghound.com
Domaine Rapet Père et Fils is an old winemaking family that can trace its roots in Pernand-Vergelesses back to 1765, thanks to the testimonial of a “tastevin” (a wine tasting cup traditionally carried by a sommelier) stamped with the year and the family name. The estate today comprises 20 hectares of land in the villages of Pernand-Vergelesses, Beaune, Savigny-Les-Beaune, Chorey-Les-Beaune, and Aloxe-Corton.Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are planted in the various vineyards, which include parcels in three Grands Crus: Corton-Charlemagne (white wine), Corton (red wine), and Corton Pougets (red wine), all situated on the slope of the Corton hill, as well as nine Premier Cru plots.
Vincent Rapet and his wife Sylvette oversee the estate, and Vincent is known for his attention to detail and classic winemaking style. His whites are whole cluster pressed, fermented in barrels (about 20% new oak), and aged in 350-liter barrels; while the reds see an average 15-day maceration period followed by maturation in 228-liter oak barriques (around 30% new wood).
